Lavishly illustrated with still images and synopses from a complete filmography comprising nearly fifty film and video works, the book contains essays by Ian Christie, Martin Herbert, Kathrin Meyer and Ethan de Seife. Herbert's text provides an incisive overview of Smith's work over the past four decades, while Christie examines his oeuvre in relation to the tradition of English eccentrism. Meyer's essay focuses on absence and abstraction in Smith's film ‘The Black Tower’, while De Seife looks at cinematic scale through the prism of his film ‘Gargantuan’.
